Charter of Yugoslavian the Theosophical Society, which was at 14.09.1925 issued by then President of the Theosophical Society, dr . Annie Besant, was related to the following lodges: “Sklad” ( led by prof. Jelisaveta Vavra), “Istina” ( Valery Mayerhoffer ), “Surya” (Joseph Vavra), “Krishnaji” (Vera Donkchinskaja), “Blavatsky”  (Hinko Hinkovič) ‘Annie Besant’ ( Mimica Vavra) and “Jedinstvo” (Milan Šoštarič). However, it seems that all these lodges haven’t been really active at issued document.

The central lodge of the Yugoslav Theosophical Society was represented by lodge “Sklad” in Zagreb, which was founded already in 1924 and in 1928 for its operations acquired apartment in Mesnički ul. 7/III. These spaces were also the official headquarters of the association, with a relatively extensive library (about 600 titles) and in which it held its place also branch of LKC (Liberal Catholic Church). Society has gradually expanded through the creation of new lodges: “Blavatsky” led by Božidar Prikril, “Adyar – Besant” (connection of circle “Besant” and study center “Adyar” ), led by Sofia Kachnič, “Jedinstvo” in Karlovac, “Sloga” in Čakovec, led by Milan Reichnig, “Bratska ljubav” in Križevci, led by Ivica Barlović and lodges “Truth” and “Istok”, led by Vojislav Kujundžić, in Belgrade, which haven’t been particularly active. The more active was theosophical lodge “Jaroslav Mudri” in Belgrade, which was formed Russian immigrants and was incorporated into the Russian Section of the Theosophical Society outside Russia.

In 1927 in Celje has began operating lodge “Krishnaji,” led by Konrad End (priest of LKC), and later began publishing journal “Žarki resnice”. In 1931 there were in Zagreb established meditative lodge “Sava”, which was led by Milica Gradišnik, and lodge “Krist”, led by Pavao Pučar and also has devoted herself to studying the Bible.

In 1932, a Yugoslav Theosophical Society already had 186 members, of whom were half from Zagreb. In the context of the society, a number of other activities found place, such as ‘Red Služenja’, led by Mila Šišić, “Krog Vitezov”, and group of young Theosophists, whose motto was: “Live pure, speak truth”, group “Majka Svijeta”, led by Marijeta Dimec, a group of “Zaštitu životinja”, fairly active group “Umjetnost i umjetnički obrt”, group “Suzbijanje alcohol”,”the Theosophical group for Istraživanja”,”Liga za slavensku kulturo”, which once per year organized the “Slavenski dan”, “Liga za svjetski mir”, “Liga konstruktivnih mislilaca”, “Liga za Karmu i Reinkarnaciju”, group “Aboliciju smrtne kazne” and “Turistička grupa”.

In 1934, the society became a member of the “International Society for Psychical Research”. In this and next year have been set up lodges “Rukmini”, headed by Zvonimir Frlan, “Blavatsky – Besant” (formerly “Adyar – Besant” and “Blavatsky “) , “Arundale” in Bjelovar, “Besant” in Ivanov Selo, led by Tomo Matašin, and the lodge “Ljubav” in Sušak. The Society had 237 members, in 1937, the number of them increased to 340th.

In 1938, Jugoslavian theosophical society organized succesful conress of European Federation of Theosophical Societies, which was governed by then president of Theosophical society, dr. G. S. Arundale.

In 1939 in Kragujevac began operating lodge for children, named “Proljetni san”, again operating in Slovenia has came to live again, with estabilishment of lodge “Služenje” in Ljubljana, led by Vladimir Komidar.  That year, the society chaned it’s name to “Teozofsko društvo v Jugoslaviji.”

In beginning of year 1941, members of Russian lodge “Jaroslav Mudri” joind him and in his context estabilished lodge “Bratstvo”. Of course this lodge operated only before beginning of april, 1941, until attack on Yugoslavia occured and occupation, when because of this reason, any operation of Theosophical socity in Yugoslavia was suspended.

Just before beginning of war, society had 378 active members, although sequental number of members since beginning of this society reached 540.

Society from year 1927 to 1941 issued magazine Teozofija, which was published six times per year.

Although the society ran out of resources, it managed to publish next books and booklets: Teozofija in Teozofsko Društvo za tiste, ki iščejo Resnico; Astralna raven and Devachanska raven, C. W. Leadbeatra; Karma, I. Butkovića; Ob nogah Učitelja, J. Krishnamurtija; Glas Tišine, H. P. Blavatsky; Luč na Pot, M. Collins; other numerous translated works were published in typed form and in limited edition.

Society has all-time mantained good relationships with leadership, because chief of police administration in Zagreb was invited on regular meetings and congresses of society and from them sent greetings to king and minister’s president.

All time of operating the society, in it’s context operated also “Nutranja Škola”, which was led by Jelisava Vavra up to year of 1938, and after that Alojz Piltaver. Prof. Jelisava Vavra at the same time guided Co-Mason lodge,

THEOSOPHICAL MOVEMENT IN YUGOSLAVE DURING SECOND WORLD WAR

When kingdom of Yugoslavia was occupied in april of 1941, members of Theosophical society in Yugoslavia at headquarters of society in Zagreb canceled all activities and changed premises into apartment, so that they protected society’s property of quisling’s government.

Members of society from Ljubljana have despite occupation continued with work and illegaly met in notary’s office at Dalmatinova 3. With large support from some members of Rotary Klub, they have provided basic equipment for typing and reproduction, they also prepared literate meterials and have actively participated in operation of Osvobodilna Fronta.

Among 378th members of Teozofsko društvo Jugoslavija, in war disappeared 186 members, so the number of them was cut in half. From members of theosophical circle in Ljubljana, two were deported to camp, six to forced labor, three were detained and four were killed.
