Before you can usefully discuss non-violence, you will first need to understand what violence is. Or as Durkheim put it in the 1800’s, without crime there wouldn’t be a society – the boundaries need to be visible before they can exist. So the first part of the session will be devoted to understanding violence. Where does it come from? Why is it useful (if it wasn’t useful, it simply wouldn’t be there)? How do people deal with threats? What is power and what is the difference between defending yourself and violence? After a short introduction the floor will be opened for deeper discussion on the subject.

The second part of the session is devoted to the question of change. Assuming the result of the first part is that we want a non-violent society, the question is how to bring about change. If change were that easy, we would long ago have decided that violence is unacceptable and changed society accordingly. Apparently we either find violence acceptable, or haven’t taken seriously how powerful the status quo is. Ghandi said to be the change you want to see in the world, so perhaps it’s time to first look at why people find it so hard to change things in their own lives. Again a short introduction, followed by discussion.

It is hoped that in the conclusion we can come to a list of concrete actions that each of us individually is prepared to do that may serve the collective ideal of a non-violent (or at least a less violent) society.«

Forum bo potekal v dveh delih z vmesnim krajšim odmorom.
